Yellow Bath House (SOLD)
Fortunate Son (on Mud Creek)
.jpg)
If you follow my blog then you know this is Bitter Lake, south of Waubay, SD. If you hope to survive on Bitter Lake, bring your best game. In the lower right corner you can see a house sitting in the lake. This is the case with a lot of farm buildings and farm land in northeastern South Dakota. Great if you are a duck. The sheep painting above is from Dar Peckham's place down by Mud Creek. I spent an afternoon following Mud Creek with my siblings "hunting" for sheep. Mud Creek flows to the west a few miles south of Bristol, South Dakota. Mud Creek flows into Amsden Dam. I fished and swam there as a child. Amsden Dam flows west to an already swollen James River east of Aberdeen, South Dakota. I believe that the James River drops approximately 6" from Aberdeen to Yankton, a distance of probably 150 "river miles" and thats pretty flat.

My Vacation
Had a wonderful vacation in Europe. Spent some francs and a lot of euros. The train through the Alps was a must do. Switzerland needs a lot of money to pay for all the infastructure needed to deal with modern life there. I have a new respect for Hannibal and his getting elephants over those mountains. I have loaded a few pictures of the trip on flickr. Saw a lot more of Bernini's sculpture in the Villa Borghese. (The picture above) Another must see in Rome. Saw some of his paintings and scupture in the Getty in L.A. last year. WOW! Day one. Drove to Norfolk, Va. Flight to Philly. Missed flight to Zurich. Spent 24 needless hours in Philly. Off to Zurich at 6:00 Tonight. The joys of travel!

Pacifics
The "Pacifics" is a commercial fishing boat docked in Wanchese Industrial Seafood Park and fishes in the coastal waters of North Carolina. I'm tired of this town again.
I am going on a vacation.

Tuna Towers (SOLD)
this painting kicked my tail.
These boats are part of the charter fishing fleet out of Pirates Cove Marina. Manteo, North Carolina. I thought you might like to see it. Do a search for Pirates Cove. Dare County's first planned unit development. This project brought me to the outer banks in 1987 working on the permits and site development. When I first visited the site there was one building, an old shipstore and bar called Drafty's Tavern. Lots of big fish caught out of this marina. The marina was excavated in 1930 and canals were excavated in 1970 and 1972. Now the project is almost built out with maybe 600+ homes and about as many boat slips if you include the marina.

Kinnakeeters Yaupon Eaters (on local lore)(SOLD)

My work on this painting could be described as striving for imperfection. Painting this plant brings to mind a story I heard long ago from a local surveyor.
A fishing village on Hatteras Island had the reputation that the locals would eat yaupon berries (scientific name "Ilex Vomitoria")(eat the berries and you vomit) in an attempt to reach some type of euphoric high. In the early 1980's the village was incorporated. The locals decided to change the name of the village from Kinnakeet to Avon, North Carolina. The locals wanted to shed all remnants of their berry eating past and being jokingly referred to as "Kinnakeeters yaupon eaters".

All along the bowline (aka) "Pink Boat"(SOLD)

I am enjoying this new subject matter. More of the charter fishing fleet docked in Pirates Cove Marina. World Class Billfishing every summer. Off shore fishing is always an adventure, and just seeing the gulf stream is worth the trip. 35 miles to the gulf stream.

Go Skins! (SOLD)
now it looks like this.
This red boat is docked in Pirates Cove Marina. Probably part of the charter fleet that fishes out of Oregon Inlet. The owner is certainly a Red Skins fan. There are spears on the sides. I did not catch the name of the boat. If I do, I will rename the painting. It seems perhaps my last paintings have been perhaps too centered. fatal error. Thanks for looking.oil on canvas 20"X20" (SOLD)

Assurance (On moving on)
What may or may not be evident in this version is that I have decided on moving on with my life!
here is more progress in the form of more paint on the canvas. I will now put more paint on it and take a better picture. I have not had much experience painting waves or water, but I learn a little something with every painting. At first it seems like mindless work, (mix muddy gray paint with other colors and smear on a saturated canvas) ,without rhyme or reason. Then I add more paint and motion seems to appear. I have spent more time just adding more paint to the paint that was already there, now I plan to add some more paint on top of this.
I spent some time just getting the guy approximately to human proportions. I want this to have a flat graphic sort of quality. Instead it looks like this.
