Nice Kitty (mule drama)

These are Cindy's Shoes. There is a town not far from here called, Mashoes, North Carolina. Sometimes I wander around the house asking about that place. "Where are Mashoes?"

Kitty Hawk Crabber (SOLD)

I drive past this boat on my way out of Kitty Hawk. There are a lot of crab boats like this in the canals on Outer Banks of North Carolina. These boats are used to  fish for blue crab in the Currituck, Alblemarle and Pamlico Sounds.
If you would like this painting for your wall, send me an email.

Bring it with you when you come (SOLD)

For me a work in progress can change in good ways. I decided to forget the architecture. I think it is an improvement. This is a very good exercise to see my works in progress next to my photos in thumbnail.
This painting is a work in progress. I decided to show you my subjects. I saw what Dana Cooper did with the 5 girls on a bench and here I come.  I decided to try to paint this because I did not think I could.   I am still not sure. Sometimes my works in progress should have stayed there or here or bring it with you when you come.
Now that we are discussing bring it with you when you come........
Someone bought "Serendipity" the house in Rodanthe in previous paintings and is moving it to a "safer" location. As a rule the minimum building  distance for a single family residence  from the ocean (MBL) (minimum building line) is determined this way.
The erosion rate X The length of your mortage.
an example.
A 30 year mortgage in an erosion zone determined to be 4 feet a year would be 120' back from the first line of stable vegetation, wherever that is....

Serendipity Now (SOLD)

This is from another photo furnished by my painting mate Mick. Serendipity again. I owe you Mick. For some reason this painting feels somber in a way that is hard to shake. I think the open electrical panel on the front of the house is the saddest element.  The elctrical panel and the house are both vacant. When a house is condemned they "pull the (meter) ". Similar to "pull the plug".
The perfect gift for Festuvus celebrations.
Serendipity Now.

The Village Icons

The Outer Banks of North Carolina has a lot of icons. One obvious symbol is the spirals of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and this is pirate country.

Go Skins! (SOLD)

now it looks like this.
This red boat is docked in Pirates Cove Marina. Probably part of the charter fleet that fishes out of Oregon Inlet. The owner is certainly a Red Skins fan. There are spears on the sides. I did not catch the name of the boat. If I do, I will rename the painting. It seems perhaps my last paintings have been perhaps too centered. fatal error. Thanks for looking.

Marvin dies with a tit in his hand (SOLD)

Marvin Nygaard married Helen Nilson. Soon after they bought a farm just down the hill from Tabor Church. Tabor Church cemetery has a lot of headstones with names like Nilson, and Rickmo, and Nygaard. Like most of the farms in the area, Marvin had dairy cows. Everyday he would rise at 4:00 AM, and milk his cows. He would feed them, and he would eat something. Marvin would go to his "day" job in town. At the end of another day, he would return home and milk his cows for the final time that day, feed them, and finish the rest of his daily chores. He would go up to the house and eat. In the spring of the year Helen often spoke kind words and coached Marvin about fixing the broken gate that allowed the hogs into her newly planted garden. On other ocassions, Helen would go right down to the barn and offer spontaneous encouragement while Marvin was milking. Ancestors on the hill, upon overhearing Helen encourage Marvin on progressive farming practices, certainly rested in peace knowing their lineage was secure. One day Marvin didn't come up to the house. Helen found him hunched over behind a cow with udders full of milk. At the funeral someone commented on how straight Marvin had planted his fence posts.

Enemy Swim (SOLD)

The following is an email I received yesterday. Its from a woman in Ohio that vacationed here and bought one of my paintings.

Rick
This is just to say thank you for painting my picture of the outer banks house.. I purchased it at the obx grill in Corolla while having breakfast there.. I am back in Ohio now and the painting is hanging in my living room. It will be a reminder of the beautiful vacation there and will be my special house on the beach ..every day of the year...I have never put a brush to a canvas ..perhaps I will try now ( smile) I hope you continue to paint so others can enjoy as I do the gift you have to share..

again thank you and God bless..Barb

I swear I did not make this up.

There is a lake not far from Webster, S.D. Just for the sake of editorial revisionism this is the account that "they" have written about what supposedly happened at Enemy Swim Lake. It isn't really worth a fight either way! But just for the record and to quiet any doubt. It does vary from the account that Gordie told us.
There is an Indian Reservation with a school and lots of pastures near Enemy Swim Lake. They probably have a website too. Anyway that wasn't the point. This is about Pasture Month. It takes one hell of a fence to keep buffalo in. They have such a thick skull that they are impervious to reason. They will "bunch up" in corners and suffocate. You can well imagine how much this complicates the fencing process. The Indians had it right. Our neighbor raises buffalo for breed stock and specialty meats and stuff like skulls and hides. He runs the bait shop in Webster, South Dakota. Right across from The A&W. Just ask Doug. He knows where the walleye are biting. Tell him I said hello. http://www.sportsmanscove.20m.com/

The Cow Incident (the magical qualities of milk)(SOLD)

The cow incident happened one June afternoon while I was out looking for some stray cattle. After lunch I liked to look  for them in the soft grass under the willow trees. On ocassion I would look for them all day or until the sun was setting. I was not the type of farmer that could be found lying about the house when there was "man's work" to be done. From that particular vantage point in the shade of the willows not even the smallest calf could twitch it's ear without my noticing. I also became aware that the tops of my boots could make Willard Horter's silo's in the distance appear and disappear if I closed one eye and then the other, ..........
I was startled out of my heightened state of concentrating on finding cattle by the sound of breathing near my face.

The Beach Road

I am trying to determine how few shapes and colors represent a universal view of North Carolina Highway 12 (the beachroad) . How few strokes are required for you to recognize and think, "yeah,.....we're at the beach." Could be very boring or........aligorical? I have been thinking about this and then the idea "jelled" into this painting after a comment about unplugged lowercase art. See milepost 3.5 "life is just flyin' by"! You can buy this painting directly from me for $250.00

Mulligan's (on painting drunk) (SOLD)

I took a photo at 35mph headed north on the beachroad. The camera was tilted and I decided I could warp the architecture back into landscape. This was a fun painting. Hey, that's Gin Soaked Boy's car! Don't drink and drive while viewing a bar scene along North Carolina Highway 12 ( the beachroad) Acrylic on Canvas 24"X36".
This painting is sold.

Bedroom Windows

Another scene along North Carolina Highway 12 ( the Beachroad) This guy needs a new roof! There are 2 ways to do corners on cedar shakes, one is with corner boards, and the other is a "weaved corner" More craftsman look. Look for them. You can nap in this room after your swim.
Acrylic on canvas 24"X24" You can buy this painting directly from the artist for $250.00

Highway 12 Revisited #2 (SOLD)

Finally. Another painting. Similar to Highway 12 Revisited. This was another canvas that I first ruined with some left over red paint. Then a complete failure as a large landscape that looked similar to the gin soaked boy. Now this. Another one of them endless days. Swim paralell to the RIP CURRENT
I always try to "ruin" my new starts right off. It gets that part over with. I use the mud that is left over on my pallette. Now I'm not worried about the start. Or how good it is going to be. It's gotta get better. Right? There is some silly french term that has something to do with blonding the canvas. 18"X22" SOLD!
