yesterday's flower

Hi, my name is Rick, I am a photoholic and this is my 4th painting without a photograph. I moved the tomato. I must be suffering some kind of photo withdrawl. Wow this hurts! I have had the hiccups off and on for the last 24 hours. Now my stomach muscles ache with every hic. If it keeps up I could get sixpack muscles by default. Hic. Wow, if you see the flaw's in this painting I blame it on the hiccups. I get them sometimes for a day or more maybe once a year. It could be what kills me. Yeah, sure, hiccups can kill you. I heard about some guy that lived with them for 50plus years. Hic woke me last night a couple of times. I have been to the doctor about hiccups. Doctor shruged his shoulder's and said, "Rick, take this thorazine". I am going to scour the medicine cabinet, but I know Cindy threw them away. Hic. Hey Doc, moo...ore thorazine hic please....... It... does.... the.......trick.....e..v...e....r....y..............t.....i......m.......e...... Hic. Wow this hurts.

CW Mug

So the more I read in other blogs the more mistakes I am aware of in my paintings. Help, Marilyn, its happening. Disappearance by committee. In an artblog yesterday I learned how bad it is to work from photo's. Meanwhile somewhere between slowing down in an effort to improve my paintings and in an effort to not paint from photo's heres a still life. My very first still life. My favorite cup with a flower. I guess its inside plein air painting. Acrylic on Canvas 14"X11". You can buy this painting directly from the artist for $120.00

I blame myself (SOLD)

The photo does not do the painting justice. too much flash. Another few hours with washes and bob ross clouds. I think it wise to set this aside and move on.
I felt I should slow down on this painting. It just seems like I ignore it and attack it in short bursts. The house probably has 9 coats of paint. pretty much oxide red. the sky has changed colors about 6 times. I had some great clouds that resembled potatos. The green area has only about 3 to 6 coats of paint. I scraped off paint a couple of times. I read in an artblog today "if you can't paint, paint big." People like that. this painting is definitely lowercase. all the way. My camera caught this at 35 miles per hour. I don't know how I have missed this beautiful little red cottage. I doubt that it will be around long. I will look for it now on my trips back and forth along North Carolina Highway 12, the beachroad. When it meets the wrecking ball it may be replaced by a 12 bedroom 14 bath McMansion. Glad I caught it.
Check out this artblog. Its a riot. http://onpainting.wordpress.com/

Acrylic on canvas 18"X36. (SOLD)Thanks Debbie from Richmond. I hope you like the painting. Please feel free to leave a comment.

Its all about you (SOLD)

I really like the subject. Suitable for boss's or any authority figure you are trying to suck up to. Yeah, buddy, its all about you. lowercase unplugged dogs at the beach. When I post something I feel like that truckdriver out on the highway at 3:30 AM on his cb radio CLICK"..........are you out there good buddie?....., your the only friend I got."
Makes a great gift for the conference room's or the boss's office. I know you always say that you agree. Acrylic on Canvas. 11"X14" (SOLD)

Pelican in seascape (SOLD)

I was sort of trying for green waves with shadows. Rough water for such a placid bird. Who doesn't like pelicans?

The Beach Road

I am trying to determine how few shapes and colors represent a universal view of North Carolina Highway 12 (the beachroad) . How few strokes are required for you to recognize and think, "yeah,.....we're at the beach." Could be very boring or........aligorical? I have been thinking about this and then the idea "jelled" into this painting after a comment about unplugged lowercase art. See milepost 3.5 "life is just flyin' by"! You can buy this painting directly from me for $250.00

Bluefish (SOLD)

When I heard about the bluefish blitz's that happened along North Carolina Highway 12, I knew I had to move here. I have been very fortunate to say that I fished lots of 'em! From the Virginia State Line to Ocracoke Inlet I chased these guys. I never kept one. A lot of them ended up in dumpsters in Virginia. They have an oily taste. Ginsoaked boy claimed he could catch them with spell check and a garden hose! Acrylic on linen 9"X12"

Well Just Because

Debbie is an internet friend. her blog is on the bottom of the page. see the foal there. This painting is kicking my but. lots of hours. some progress. I am down to 40 layers of paint on poor debbie's face. The good new's is she lost 20 pounds, but I can't finish the face. I tried a cap and that didn't help. how can an area 1" X1" be so tough. State Bird

South Dakota invites "out of state" hunters to come hunt their state bird. Every year the bird literaly runs for its life. Can we discuss open season on the cardinal. I have fond memories of shotgun blasts blowing these beautiful birds out of a red morning sky. The ring neck pheasant was imported to the great plains from China. Acrylic on Canvas 18"X18"

KITTY HAWK MEETING! (SOLD)

Nobody even told me there was going to be a meeting. I walk through the Kitty Hawk Walmart to buy canvas and candy. I wonder who are these people that are on my island! Meanwhile, this is another scene along North Carolina Highway 12 (the beachroad). Acrylic on canvas 16"X36". (SOLD)

Mile Post 3.5 (Donation)

Just over this mound of sand lies the entire Atlantic Ocean. Its awesome. I moved the power pole to a more prominent position in the painting. It's shadow showed up on the roof, and meanwhile, another scene is happening out there, somewhere along North Carolina Highway 12 ( the beachroad). Acrylic on canvas 12"X18" I donated this painting to the Dare County Arts Council. $150.00 (I hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I did.)

Lagoon Como

There is a picturesque lake somewhere in Italy called Lake Como. A lot of respected painters try to capture moments in places like that or Venice. It looks a little like this only there are lots of stone vases with red geraniums set out along orange stucco walls. Other than that its still Lagoon Como. Do you like sausage on your pizza? It is difficult to turn away from beauty like this!

Spotted Hog

A spotted hog lived in a grove of trees. He wasn't wild, just wary after the eartag incident. We saw him in the early mornings. In the afternoons we knew that he was sleeping in the shade of the cottonwoods. That is how it used to be, a long time ago, before the Lowe's parking lot. Acrylic on canvas. 24"X16". You can buy this painting directly from the artist. How much is pork in euros? $100.00

Rooster on Buzzard Bay (SOLD)

Mrs. Haywood lives on Buzzard Bay. She is alway's bragging about her beautiful rooster. She sent me an email. I agree with her, he is pretty cool looking. I added the spur. The poor guy broke it off a few month's ago. He will get to wear it again, someday down by the sound. Acrylic on canvas 24"X16". (SOLD)

Mulligan's (on painting drunk) (SOLD)

I took a photo at 35mph headed north on the beachroad. The camera was tilted and I decided I could warp the architecture back into landscape. This was a fun painting. Hey, that's Gin Soaked Boy's car! Don't drink and drive while viewing a bar scene along North Carolina Highway 12 ( the beachroad) Acrylic on Canvas 24"X36".
This painting is sold.

Shore Leave (SOLD)

These stupid birds act like the fenced tern nesting area doesn't exist at all! Little eggs and 4 wheel drive don't mix. While I was painting this I kept thinking shore leave. I kept painting in and taking out the looming dark clouds in the distance. I decided that the wheel rut offered sufficient drama. I feel somehow guilty for the perils that these poor birds are painted in. Acrylic on canvas 18"X36".(SOLD)

Justin's Herd(SOLD)

Justin kept back some of his best holstien hiefers and crossed them with black angus and hereford bulls. The mix is "black baldie" brood cows. Addition of the holstien gave them more milk for the calf and a bigger frame. Good mix for a brood cow, generally. Holstien aren't quite as thrifty as some of the european breeds. Small polled heads typical of angus breeds mean ease of birth. Cross this cow with a purebred red angus bull, add lots of mother's milk and all the corn you can eat. They grow all summer in the sun, and the following spring this baby is usda choice and ready for market.
Acrylic on Canvas 12"X24"
This painting is owned by Justin's son, Trent.

Justin's Pasture

Justin Nilson is another one of my 80+ aged uncles. He used to have a dairy farm. He had all the modern stuff, like plows and corn pickers. One year his plow caught the corner of a very large rock. Soon after that he sold his dairy cows and switched his operation to beef cattle. The plow hasn't put furrows in his pastures in 30 years.

Bedroom Windows

Another scene along North Carolina Highway 12 ( the Beachroad) This guy needs a new roof! There are 2 ways to do corners on cedar shakes, one is with corner boards, and the other is a "weaved corner" More craftsman look. Look for them. You can nap in this room after your swim.
Acrylic on canvas 24"X24" You can buy this painting directly from the artist for $250.00

Clinton's Cow (SOLD)

I couldn't call her 7211. This girl brings back a lot of memories. My uncle Clinton Nilson and his son Craig operate a dairy farm. Clinton is probably 80. He jokes that if life and death are just, then he will die with a teat in his hand. (pronounced "tit)" Dairy farmer humor. Acrylic on canvas. 24"X24" (SOLD)

Don't Look Back (SOLD)

There is a lesson here for all of us. Somehow these animal paintings are beginning to feel like just an induldgence. Who want's some ass hanging on their wall? . I may hang this in my May One Artist Show at The Dare County Arts Council Gallery in Manteo, NC. Unless somebody out there in cyberworlds wants an ass hanging on their wall. Acrylic on Canvas 36"X24".

Mp8 revisited

Another sceen along the beach road. I added the pole. Who does that? linen on canvas. 9X12 The combo of linen, acrylic and small canvas's is like applying runny makeup to a mirror with your finger. Not that I would know about those things. $35.00

Welcome to Southern Shores

Consider this more of a very very large study of a Hollywood Juniper and power poles to the beachroad. "Welcome to Southern Shores". Lots of powerpoles and an ocean view. Painting is not like all pleasureable things, in that, it is difficult to know when you are finished. Acrylic on canvas 36"X24" $175.00

Just listen (private collection)

The first animals that I remember drawings were the horses. Who the hell wants to draw some silly chicken. I saw a painting of some old guy riding a mule on the internet yesterday. I bought a book once on drawing horses. I sort of wanted the mule and rider to be listening to some unheard far away noise. Do you hear it. Just Listen. There is a self portrait competition at Glen Eure's Ghost Fleet Gallery. I might enter myself and the cowboy. All edges are painted. Suitable for framing or hang it as is. Acrylic on canvas 24"X16". Not for sale

Ruts (SOLD)

We've all been in these. Soft shoulder means soft shoulder. Proceed immediately to the nearest beach access. Don't even attempt to pull over along North Carolina Highway 12 (The beachroad). I moved the utilitiy poles 40+ feet to the south just to get them in the frame. Its North Carolina Power's problem now. I didn't call uloco. I'm a wild man with these brushes. Acrylic on canvas 24"X16"

Design Gone Wild (SOLD)

Highway 12 Revisited #2 (SOLD)

Finally. Another painting. Similar to Highway 12 Revisited. This was another canvas that I first ruined with some left over red paint. Then a complete failure as a large landscape that looked similar to the gin soaked boy. Now this. Another one of them endless days. Swim paralell to the RIP CURRENT
I always try to "ruin" my new starts right off. It gets that part over with. I use the mud that is left over on my pallette. Now I'm not worried about the start. Or how good it is going to be. It's gotta get better. Right? There is some silly french term that has something to do with blonding the canvas. 18"X22" SOLD!
