The Stinton Ranch Dude, where are the cows? (SOLD)

I must admit to smiling more than once while painting this.
Just don't go there girlfriend.
If you go to the Stinton Ranch looking for cows, well dude, just forget about it. There's no cows in Nag's Head.

Oil on canvas 16"X20"

A Nag's Head Scenario (SOLD)

This is a commission I am doing for a friend, and a work in progress at that.
 Still too much red?
 You think?

Not such good news.
My mother died a few days ago. She was 94. Rosemary. For the last 10 months she has been in a care facility in South Dakota. I have been calling her every day for the past year. Needless to say I miss her and our converstions and everything seems so sad.
I am going to South Dakota for a while. There is still 3 feet of snow there. What's that all about?
I have been faithful and do something artistic every day. Mostly, of late, my efforts  have not satisfied me enough to post them.
I read somewhere that painting is one thing that gets harder to do the more you know about it. If that be true, then I may be really close to mastering oil painting!
I am still busy working on my remodel/renovation project.
Thank you all.

Bait on Ole McGregor (SOLD)

Good news.
Another month.? It has been. I have had this work in some stage on my easel for that long.
I am back. Back to a new normal. My marathon construction project drags on. The scope of the work changed, but I back to having a "habitable" space to paint.

Thank you all for following my blog and liking my stuff.
Here I am adding a coat of protective finish to a few paintings in a corner of my mostly completed "studio".

Waste Deep (SOLD)

I find myself easily distracted and sweeping the floor a lot. I am waist deep in remodeling my "Studio". I make the "in parentheses" sign with my fingers every time I mention it. My "Studio". I am waiting on windows and sheet rock and I am painting in the middle of a construction zone. I have faith and believe that doing this construction project is the right thing, but I must admit, it is a distraction from painting.  To tell the truth, selling this painting would go quite a ways in convincing me!
Oil on linen 18"x24"
I met the people that bought this piece. and here is what Waste Deep means.
Thank you for buying this and now I am convinced.

Reddeemed (SOLD)

Its been a month? Wow. Good news everybody. I had a kidney removed and it was not cancerous. Happens about 3% of the time. I feel fine. My studio is coming along. Its going to be great. I am liking this painting. How better to describe my feelings? Reddemed. The name of the red boat.
I dodged that bullet. Who knew?
I am blessed.
I fished in Florida last week, but the fishing was not good. Red Tide was blamed for a pretty bad fish kill along the beaches. My first experiece with Red Tide. Tough stuff.

Works in progress

Unremarkable as it may appear above is a birds eye view of my studio. All the wallboard has been removed and tomorrow I will tear out all of these sloped walls and replace with a standard wall section. I will gain about 200 square feet of floor space. Its gonna be great.
The painting above and in the birds eye of my office is

Meanwhile back at the Stinton Ranch (SOLD)

Meanwhile back at the Stinton Ranch, painting by Rick Nilson
This house, known as The Stinton Ranch sits in the Alblemarle Sound at the end of Soundside Road in Nag's Head, North Carolina. Pretty much the only house I know that does. For reason's unexplained this house is on the National Historic Registry. The home was demolished in Hurricane Irene. I was sad to hear of its demise. I was puzzled when they decided to rebuild it. I have painted this house before. Since they decided to rebuild it, I decided I should at least make an effort to paint it again. I do not know if the original owner's of the property are living there.
This painting was done from a photograph of the original structure, and thus more accurate than what is now constructed at the end of Soundside Road.
Good News Everybody. I have renal cancer. I believe it is very curable. I will have surgery soon. I probably won't write about this much more. I don't want me or my painting to be defined by this.
I am going to remodel my studio and add some more square footage. I am going to do my best to keep painting through all of this.
I will have a new photograph of myself done soon. I might put on a new shirt. Life is wonderful. I am excited about how this ordeal will reinspire passion for improving my skills as a painter. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Bon Ton Roulet!

Cancer Crab (SOLD)

Last week I went to see my doctor. After some tests he told me that I have cancer. I will go next week for more tests and probably an operation out of town. Needless to say I am a bit nervous about this, but I have lived a wonderful life so far. I hope to be painting again soon. I will probably be sporadic with my posts and paintings. I think the worst part of this is my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. She has one more chemotherapy treatment left.

Entice with Spice (SOLD)

I was reading somewhere  that the age of the blog is giving way to facebook and twitter. I don't know for sure if that is true statement.  What is a true statement is that I was a more convincing liar before Facebook. Practicing the craft of deception and keeping up a perky facebook  status among "friends" requires maintaince to stay relevant. Honesty is the best policy, unless, of course, you are an exceptional liar.
This is a still life of seafood condiments.
