Whalebone Junction (SOLD)

She deserved a better board. I turned the board around and added a local surf shop's logo. The Jolly Roger with eye patch and surfboard cross arms.Whalebone Surf Shop. Named after Whalebone Junction. A whale once washed up at the intersection of US Highway 64 and NC Highway 12 (The Beachroad). Thus the name whalebone. Way Rad, Dude!

Call your mother (on Bitter Lake) (SOLD)

Here is what I did to it.
More of those sheep on Bitter Lake. The only white is the white of the canvas. I like it so far, but adding white to color is the turning point. I would say that I have the composition pretty close, and the tones seem as good as I know how to make them. Color should only enhance what I have so far. At least that's what suppose to happen. Thanks for looking.

Rooster Face

These birds are a blast to paint. I do feel that there is also a challenge in these birds. I don't use any reference material. That's my excuse for having so much fun! There is a party every day in Rick Nilson's studio.

Stupid Dog

I tried to give this guy a "pastey skinned sunburned slack muscled" look. I was going for a look of contempt in both figures. I added the dog. Odd, painting the dog took all of 1 minute, and then I stood back and smiled. Oil on linen 14"X14"

The Summer House (on coming from grey) (SOLD)

fin.
This is an under painting. I find it is easier for me to control the paint if I start with a grey scale such as this and then add color. I think it has something to do with my training using markers. If a painting is as complex as this, adding white too soon, for me, is like inviting certain failure. I have probably washed away more paint than I have put on this piece thus far. I think this is a distinct advantage that linen has over canvas when using oil paints, and for me represents the biggest difference between oil and acrylic paint. The process of painting that I use is probably the brand of a studio painter, as opposed to painting on site. The next time I paint on site, however, I will do a line sketch with markers on paper to establish the composition and the contrasts before I begin painting. I read this in a Kevin McPhearson's book. I have been working with the oils more of late because it seemed better suited for painting outdoors. The type of painting that I have been doing in oils, of coming from grey to color,(shown above) as opposed to coming from color to the correct shades and intensity of color, was brought to my attention by Mike Rooney. (It made sense to me at the time),but I did not distinguish myself as that type of painter. I realized later that he was describing my style of painting. I don't know if this makes any sense to you. If it does or doesn't you owe yourself a painting demonstration or a workshop with Mike. I learned a lot of interesting things about other ways of painting from Mike. I welcome every opportunity to talk smart with other artists. Hey, it works for me! He has a lot of video's here Jerry'sArtaRama Check out his free stuff and his cd's.

Nag's Head Oceanfront

This is a quick pen and marker sketch I did from memory. I watched Mike Rooney paint this scene this afternoon. Mike can smear some paint. Look for him on Daily Painters. and his blog. I hope that we can paint together sometime. Thanks, Mike.

Jumping Shrimp (SOLD)

I stopped painting on this. I did not want to lose what I had, for the sake of attempting to make it better. I spent some time deciding what not to paint. I spent more time deciding how not to paint. I do find it helpful to see this in thumb nail on a computer screen. Often I can look at it and see exactly what it needs. Oil on linen 18"X18" (SOLD)

Two step (on practice)(SOLD)

I wanted this to have a real loose look. I am confident I succeeded. I am less than certain that I even have an opinion about it. I read in an art blog today to assume that what I'm painting is practice for my next one. I practiced on it for a while and then I didn't practice any more.

Prancing Shrimp (SOLD)

fin
I am trying to stay true to my original rodeo sketches. I have not yet used any white on this. I find that I can make more revisions without getting to battleship grey if I keep white away until I need it. I read somewhere that it was easier to make a painting lighter. So, I have a pretty open field in front of me. I really like this mixing the equine or bovine with the crustaceans. This is a work in progress 18"X22" Oil on linen

Rodeo Shrimp

(SOLD)

One morning during my college years in Texas, (Professor Emeritus) Fred Klatt ate a Tic-Tac just before class. I was able to get close enough to hear him critiquing a drawing with a fellow student, ".......lines and arcs have definitive beginnings and definitive ends. On the other hand, scratches, like those you show me, just have the middle part."

Shrimp#10 (SOLD)

I taped a piece of pre-gessoed linen to a piece of plywood. I will have to mount it on a board of some fashion in order to sell or display this painting. I have not done this before, I usually build my own frames and stretch my own canvas. Prepared linen is a luxury. The linen panels are wonderful. It makes duck canvas feel like painting on gravel.

The outdoor shower (SOLD)

Outdoor showers are wonderful things. I have one in my back yard with a nice rose growing up the side. Ouch! Some time in May I begin using it every day until it gets too cold. I would say that 95+% of the homes on the outer banks have outdoor shower's. Few are used more than mine. Mine also offers more privacy than this one.

Marvin dies with a tit in his hand (SOLD)

Marvin Nygaard married Helen Nilson. Soon after they bought a farm just down the hill from Tabor Church. Tabor Church cemetery has a lot of headstones with names like Nilson, and Rickmo, and Nygaard. Like most of the farms in the area, Marvin had dairy cows. Everyday he would rise at 4:00 AM, and milk his cows. He would feed them, and he would eat something. Marvin would go to his "day" job in town. At the end of another day, he would return home and milk his cows for the final time that day, feed them, and finish the rest of his daily chores. He would go up to the house and eat. In the spring of the year Helen often spoke kind words and coached Marvin about fixing the broken gate that allowed the hogs into her newly planted garden. On other ocassions, Helen would go right down to the barn and offer spontaneous encouragement while Marvin was milking. Ancestors on the hill, upon overhearing Helen encourage Marvin on progressive farming practices, certainly rested in peace knowing their lineage was secure. One day Marvin didn't come up to the house. Helen found him hunched over behind a cow with udders full of milk. At the funeral someone commented on how straight Marvin had planted his fence posts.
