Losing Face (SOLD)

This is the biggest canvas I have ever painted on. this started off as a chance to stain a very large carvas that had been sitting neatly wrapped in celophane. I felt sort of a  guilty pleasure painting this in knowing it is pretty much of an unsellable piece.  Somehow a canvas of this size is intimidating in its very presence, you perhaps may know the feeling.  I like the unfinished quality of this. Accompanied with the sense of rightousness that comes with setting aside childish things, and then feeling somehow less foolish than had I carried this charade to an overworked death. I did not have a model to work from, not even a good photograph of a crab in this position, face or no. I am getting to know my subject quite well, and  take comfort in knowing that losing face for a softshell crab is far more tramatic and painful than it is for me.

 Below are some pictures of the New Fishing Pier in Nags Head. For those of you that are not familiar with softshell crabs, one of the things that happens to them is the face is cut off and the back is peeled away to clean it before it is fried or sauteed.

Back to the Outerlimits (SOLD)

I was going through some old pictures and found this boat painting I did about a year ago. For reasons unexplained, I posted it and then deleted the post. Here it is again. This is a scene in Pirates Cove Marina. The pink boat is the Outer Limits.

Ethridge Seafood and Yellowfin (SOLD)

This is the back side, or rather, the waterfront side of Ethridge Seafood Co. in Wanchese, NC. One of the new worries for the local fishing and boating industry is, due to spending cuts, the US Army Corps. of Engineers will stop dredging Oregon Inlet. This has happened before and eventually dredging of the canal is resumed. If Oregon Inlet is not dredged regularily it will eventually close of its own accord. Oregon Inlet is the only inlet into the inland waters of the sounds from Rudee's Inlet in Virginia Beach to Ocracoke Inlet.  You can imagine what that would mean to boats like The YellowFin. New Moon (SOLD)

I took the reference photo I used for this painting last fall. It was not after I had cropped it and printed it and had the painting half finished that  I looked at the photo of the sky and almost invisible was the new moon directly in the center of my sky.

I am quite pleased with this painting of the Kitty Hawk Pier at sundown.

Official Intermission (Furlough Boys) (SOLD)

I have 2 groups of 3 beginner painters come paint with me in my "studio" (aka mancave). They are all fun interesting people. Today one group all painted the painting above. Enemy Swim (SOLD)

The following is an email I received yesterday. Its from a woman in Ohio that vacationed here and bought one of my paintings.

This is just to say thank you for painting my picture of the outer banks house.. I purchased it at the obx grill in Corolla while having breakfast there.. I am back in Ohio now and the painting is hanging in my living room. It will be a reminder of the beautiful vacation there and will be my special house on the beach ..every day of the year...I have never put a brush to a canvas ..perhaps I will try now ( smile) I hope you continue to paint so others can enjoy as I do the gift you have to share..

There is a lake not far from Webster, S.D. Just for the sake of editorial revisionism this is the account that "they" have written about what supposedly happened at Enemy Swim Lake. It isn't really worth a fight either way! But just for the record and to quiet any doubt. It does vary from the account that Gordie told us.

There is an Indian Reservation with a school and lots of pastures near Enemy Swim Lake. They probably have a website too. Anyway that wasn't the point. This is about Pasture Month. It takes one hell of a fence to keep buffalo in. They have such a thick skull that they are impervious to reason. They will "bunch up" in corners and suffocate. You can well imagine how much this complicates the fencing process. The Indians had it right. Our neighbor raises buffalo for breed stock and specialty meats and stuff like skulls and hides. He runs the bait shop in Webster, South Dakota. Right across from The A&W. Just ask Doug. He knows where the walleye are biting. Tell him I said hello. http://www.sportsmanscove.20m.com/
