3 gulls in flight (SOLD)
I am again liking these gulls.
My first recollection of seagulls was watching them fly behind the farm machinery and eat in mass whatever the farm equipment would stir up. At first they seemed like welcome company on those lonely trips back and forth across the fields. They would eat earth worms until they were too heavy to fly. I questioned then how they fit into God's Plan for all things. Now that I am older I don't think about God's plans. She knew that they were put here to eat all that stuff we wouldn't. Besides, I don't like earth worms much anyway.

Reel Chaos (SOLD)
I think this is enough paint. When I like a piece I will paint compuslively on it until I am satisfied with it or until I have killed it. I really do like how this one turned out, not overworked.
I am posting my reference photo. If any of you painters would like to paint this boat, feel free. I would love to see how someone else would paint this. This is a new sportfisher named Reel Chaos that is being built in Wanchese, NC. I would guess it is a 70' plus?

Buzz Cuts (SOLD)
Hey, this is, (by my standards) my 900th painting. Originally I thought, "........well, maybe I will do....50." that was in Sept. 2007. Now I have some confidence I will see 1000. Most days I say a little prayer in thanks for being able to just one more, maybe a little better than the last. Some days it works.

Losing Face (SOLD)
This is the biggest canvas I have ever painted on. this started off as a chance to stain a very large carvas that had been sitting neatly wrapped in celophane. I felt sort of a guilty pleasure painting this in knowing it is pretty much of an unsellable piece. Somehow a canvas of this size is intimidating in its very presence, you perhaps may know the feeling. I like the unfinished quality of this. Accompanied with the sense of rightousness that comes with setting aside childish things, and then feeling somehow less foolish than had I carried this charade to an overworked death. I did not have a model to work from, not even a good photograph of a crab in this position, face or no. I am getting to know my subject quite well, and take comfort in knowing that losing face for a softshell crab is far more tramatic and painful than it is for me.
thanks for looking.
Oil on canvas 36"X48
Below are some pictures of the New Fishing Pier in Nags Head. For those of you that are not familiar with softshell crabs, one of the things that happens to them is the face is cut off and the back is peeled away to clean it before it is fried or sauteed.

The Fish Mongers
Pirates Cove Marina has a fish cleaning house and someone will clean your catch while you wait.
If you ever go to Houston....no. I mean, if you ever go someplace nice, a nice marina with beautiful fishing boats like these, there is a very good chance that they (the boats) were built within 25 miles of where I live. This sweeping bowline is a signature look of fishing boats built on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. At the peak of our last economic turn there were no less than 20 companies building custom yachts in and around Wanchese. Today there are 3. The assemblages of such qualified craftsmen in one place building boats at one time may never happen again.

Back to the Outerlimits (SOLD)

The first time I saw a flounder I thought, perhaps God also makes mistakes. The first time I heard someone say they were going to "gig" for flounder, (being an aggie), I gave them a thumbs up.

Ethridge Seafood and Yellowfin (SOLD)
This is the back side, or rather, the waterfront side of Ethridge Seafood Co. in Wanchese, NC. One of the new worries for the local fishing and boating industry is, due to spending cuts, the US Army Corps. of Engineers will stop dredging Oregon Inlet. This has happened before and eventually dredging of the canal is resumed. If Oregon Inlet is not dredged regularily it will eventually close of its own accord. Oregon Inlet is the only inlet into the inland waters of the sounds from Rudee's Inlet in Virginia Beach to Ocracoke Inlet. You can imagine what that would mean to boats like The YellowFin. Check it out on googlemaps.
I like this one and I am starting to like the slick surfaces of panels. Thanks for looking

?Que Me Importa
A lot of things about my "studio" suck. The natural lighting is poor, and it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The views of the late afternoon sun across Ablemarle Sound, and Avery Pond and the marsh islands on the west side is not one of those things.
What do I care?
The sunset last night was amazing.

Sunset Babies (SOLD)
I love this subject and I feel it does capture a moment in time and perhaps memories of a warm summer day along the outer banks of north carolina.
When I was thinking about a name for this painting of babies playing in the surf at sunset and dogs and The Nags Head Fishing Pier as a back drop, well, the first thing that popped into my head was,.......... of course,
"SUNSET BABIES (ALL GOT RABIES)".
This must be what Alice Cooper was singing about.

New Moon (SOLD)
I took the reference photo I used for this painting last fall. It was not after I had cropped it and printed it and had the painting half finished that I looked at the photo of the sky and almost invisible was the new moon directly in the center of my sky.
I am quite pleased with this painting of the Kitty Hawk Pier at sundown.
