Shedder's Waltz(SOLD)

 I did something a little different here, my wee mouton. I first coated the canvas with black acrylic paint, 2 coats. I wanted to paint this instead of drawing and then coloring, which is my usual M.O.  It got me here faster and in a more loose manner.

 When I first moved to the outer banks I did not know what crab shedders were. In an elaborate process, females blue crabs are set out in pans of circulating brackish water. At an appropriate time in May, a male crab is introduced to the pan. The females sense the male and assume its time to molt. The female willingly sheds her hard crusty exoskeleton with the assumption mating will ensue (ensue?). The moment she has molted she is placed on ice and awaits her true fate. Fried Softshells. Crab shedding is what its called. If the crabs are not put on ice all but immediately, they become paper shells and then leatherbacks and then back to hard shell crabs.

Zurich

Cindy and I vacationed in Zurich last June. The train through the Swiss and Italian Alps was spectacular. I took this picture in the old part of Zurich near the sea. A beautiful place.

Ghost among my broken dreams (SOLD)

A ghost crab. Never cared for them much. Not to say that as one of God's creatures they are not beautiful, but they eat baby seaturtles when they hatch. Ghost crabs dig burrows near the nest and pull the turtles back down to their larder.  Is there a more gruesome vision? Eaten alive by a ghost. They can hear the sounds of baby turtles moving under the sand and  line up around a "boil". A boil is the action or event when baby sea turtles all hatch and scramble out of the nest and head to the claws of a ghost crabs or the open water along the outer banks of North Carolina.

I'm crushing your head(SOLD)

  I have done more crab paintings than probably any other subject.  I have never counted them. I would guess the number of paintings I have created so far is just below 600. I have probably painted 70 or more blue crabs.  I am a bit worried about over saturating the crab painting market. Is there a way of knowing other than sales?

 Do you have an opinion about oversaturation of painting types or subjects?

A Paris Stomp

Here Rick Nilson does his best to mock the masters. In this case the artist is Gustave Caillebotte and the painting is "Paris, Rainy Street". "I have just sketched in some of the shapes. This cat can be a real jerk. Sure, I  enjoy the occasional headless songbird as much as the next guy. Shirley, however, was bringing me more than we could really use.  I decided to try a collar and a bell in an attempt to level the field. Later that evening she brought a dead bunny to my studio door and proceeded to sling it's  lifeless body around like a bloody glove made of fine italian leather. I took these shots wandering around North Eastern South Dakota. In the photo with the ponies, if you look hard you will see a llama. This llama has his own story. There is also a zebra cross something and a mule.
