Go Skins! (SOLD)

now it looks like this.
This red boat is docked in Pirates Cove Marina. Probably part of the charter fleet that fishes out of Oregon Inlet. The owner is certainly a Red Skins fan. There are spears on the sides. I did not catch the name of the boat. If I do, I will rename the painting. It seems perhaps my last paintings have been perhaps too centered. fatal error. Thanks for looking.

I eat my young

I confessed. I have a quite a few canvases like this that have been recycled several times. I will add a new coat of gesso on this one again soon. The more of these I consume the better the new ones seem to be. I try not to judge myself. I think my counselor is out to get me.

As an experiment, same painting in full sun and in shade.
the fin

Yesterday was a real bitch. I photographed some soft shelled crabs before I ate them. "Requiem for a blue crab" I stained this canvas with an acrylic crimson and began an oil wash sketch. I thought you might want to see this.

Walkin' the Dog (SOLD)

Sometimes the words that describe the struggle are just that! George Gloss often said, "...honesty is the best policy, unless of course, you are an exceptional liar."

Assurance (On moving on)

What may or may not be evident in this version is that I have decided on moving on with my life!
here is more progress in the form of more paint on the canvas. I will now put more paint on it and take a better picture. I have not had much experience painting waves or water, but I learn a little something with every painting. At first it seems like mindless work, (mix muddy gray paint with other colors and smear on a saturated canvas) ,without rhyme or reason. Then I add more paint and motion seems to appear.

I have spent more time just adding more paint to the paint that was already there, now I plan to add some more paint on top of this.

I spent some time just getting the guy approximately to human proportions. I want this to have a flat graphic sort of quality. Instead it looks like this.

Rooster Concept Sketch

And now for something completely different.

Orphans with cell phones

I learn something with every painting.
I liked the sketch from the other day. I liked the way her foot twisted in an "impatient juvenile delinquent with a cell phone" type of look. Now I have painted her as a real tart.

marker sketch

I am planning on doing a workshop on drawing this summer, I have been just doing some to warm up. I feel that in order for me to improve the quality of my paintings these are a very good exercise. The problem is..............I can't paint like this!

Think Happy Thoughts

"Son, there are a lot of things in this world that you are going to have absolutely no use for." I am having fun with my new bug buddies. I left the doors to my "studio" open and the lights on to welcome them. I wander around my garden searching for subjects. Anyone watching me would surely think "Hehold, a man searching for bugs to paint in his "studio"" . I feel the cheery name helps to compensate for the subject.

KDH Cooperative Painting Workshop

If you are one of the 8 people taking my painting workshop on April 20 & 21, listen up.

I want you to bring your own photographs to paint. Bring several. When you are making the selection of those photo's, think in terms of 2 dimensional flat design. Use a critical eye and decide if what you want to paint would look like a pleasing design in black and white. If you are using a digital photo, (hopefully) crop the photo to have the same proportions as your canvas before you print it. I think this will make the workshop more rewarding. If you have sketches, please bring them also. I hope this is self explanatory. I am looking forward to meeting you. If you have any questions call me. Bring at least 2 canvases with you.

Sincerely,

Rick
