SeaSick (on what not to paint)(and when not to paint it)(SOLD)

Fin
Work in progress
Sometimes I just don't get your drift!
Sometimes I have cold starts. That's when I start a painting and question if I have mixed the right.....(green) say or why did my big beautiful potato turn into a cloud................again! Or how long is all this going to last....really? Before the cold start things, there is the bit when I am trying to decide what not to paint and how not to paint it. If it doesn't bother you the ocean is running off the canvas, then I have succeeded in my goal for this work. Or maybe its just high tide. 4 photos before "Eggs and Sausage" Acrylic on canvas 16"X36"

Ped-X (On Sandspurs)(SOLD)

One snapshot before "Eggs and Sausage". I started with a deep red black undertone. This is a fun painting. The sun is coming up over the Atlantic Ocean and the wheel ruts along Virginia Dare Trail, The Beach Road. Thank you, to The U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers, for planting sandspurs as dune stabilization. Acrylic on canvas 16"X12" Do you want this or not?(SOLD)

I got the cooler and the dog! (SOLD)

This is a fun start anyway. Things that people do every day. I will paint on this some over the weekend. I was looking for a focal point so I added the dog. Before that it was the cell phone. Before that the sign on the pole. Acrylic on canvas 14"X18"? (SOLD)

"I look at you and now I sigh" (on Ol Bill Yeats)(SOLD)

Taadah!
This is about as good as I can make this painting.
I am still working on this. I am closer. I spent quite a bit of time refining the perspective. I still am not satisfied with the over color of the house. Battleship grey is a no brainer. I sometimes catch things to fix during the process of posting a work progress. I look and now I sigh.William Butler Yeats (1865 - 1939)
  A Drinking Song
Wine comes in at the mouth And love comes in at the eye; That's all we shall know for truth Before we grow old and die. I lift the glass to my mouth, I look at you, and I sigh.
Someone tell Ol Bill .....

Why don't you just ask him? (SOLD)

For a while I wasn't sure if I would ever finish this. The more personality they had the more I wanted to paint. I winged this from the get go anyway! The idea came to me as I was looking at photos of seagulls. The lone blackbird.

My Secret Decoder Ring (on naming paintings) (SOLD)

The owner of the KDH Cooperative Gallery in Kill Devil Hills, NC, told me a story of a couple that came into the gallery one day. The husband really liked one particular painting. He called his wife over to look at it. She said she really liked it too, and then she asked what was the name of the painting. The husband read the name of the painting from the nearby plaque "...............oh, I don't like the name." They left the store without buying the painting. So do names really matter? Somebody must have an original thought. Acrylic on canvas 24"X16" (SOLD)

Salmon

(Rates may vary)
Yesterday I saw Don Gray's painting of a salmon run. I liked it so well that I sketched this last night at the kitchen counter. To satisfy your wishes to see all of my efforts. "...............I'm sorry honey, did you say something?"

Gaillardia Forests (on real men don't paint flowers) "Where are you goin' now, Biff?"(SOLD)

"..I'M GOIN' TO THE DANCE, GRANDMA!"
I usually rush to avoid painting flowers. It seemed like there were more important "man like" things to paint. I can draw pretty good vegetation, but today it's loose little flowers. This is a painting of a cottage in Nag's Head. Another September sunset on the Outer Banks. The gaillardia is a hearty little annual with orange and yellow petals, not to be confused with blue bonnets or pear trees. Bonita! This has been an enjoyable painting. Crab Whore (on sex sells art)(or art sells sex)(SOLD)

Sometimes I follow comments too. The other morning, I'm surfing blogs and some guy makes a clever comment on an artblog. I follow it to his blog. It goes to his profile. I notice he has been blogging since July 2008 and he has 12,000 hits. I think "Wow this guy must be really really good, or has a huge following!" I click on one of his blogs. He is selling time with "Art Models" with names like Angelina and Drisell. Gretchen in Sweden wants to know how old I am and whats my favorite color. Acrylic on Canvas 18"X18". (Sold to a collector in Atlanta)

Bar Scene (on painting the beachroad)

If a painting is complicated I often do an acrylic underpainting. It is difficult keeping that same loose feel in the final product. Above is proof that mucking in can be just that. I have learned important lessons with this painting. People give life to the work. Thanks Tyler. People are difficult to paint. A bar scene at sunset along the beachroad. Oil on canvas 20"X16".

Crab Interrupted (SOLD)

There was this movie about a gang of thugs. They were causing trouble and generally giving everybody grief. After a while the bad guys get everybody cornered in the livery stable. Some guy on the roof shouts out "........... its goin' down to the wire!"
Then all you hear is wind blowing. I could have tried to save them, but......
they knew not my name, and I knew not their faces, I found they were all rank strangers to me.

Lambs on Bitter Lake (SOLD)

I visited my cousin, Trent Nilson, when I was in South Dakota. (you know, Justin's kid, Trent.) "Oh yeah, the "T"MAN, what's he doin' now?" He quit shaving when his mother died, and he keeps a lot of his stuff just north of Bitter Lake. Dead cottonwoods are witness to rising water levels in Bitter Lake. If you click on the title "Lambs on Bitter Lake" above, behold, a schematic of regional lake levels. Bitter Lake has risen more than 20'. SDDOT has been busy raising the grade on lots of roads in the area.

Dream Time (approximately, except you)

I grew up on a farm in Day county, South Dakota, the glacial lakes region. One of the things that exists on the farm that few farms have is a real live cemetery. I am not certain of the dates as to when the cemetery originated, but it was when wagon trains trekked through the region from the east. A family lost 2 daughters to cholera and they buried the girls on this hill. When I was a child, my father showed me the "less than obvious" stones that marked the children's graves. The hill is one of the highest points in Day County and offers a panoramic view to the west. At sundown you can see 45 miles to Aberdeen. The more I thought about it, the more I realized these unfortunate children needed a proper headstone. So.................. One winter during my youth I created this piece. The wings are the front quarter panels of a 1950 Ford. I cut the cactus using 2 railroad signal switch crossing posts. The center piece has a bell footing with bolt holes, and the arms are cut and welded from the other. The bird is mounted on a wheel spindle and rests inside the top and it pivots with the wind. Its rear is always windward. The head is fabricated from the hood of a car. I cut a pattern from cardboard and transferred it to the hood, cut it and shaped it into the head. It has a pivot point similar to those bobbing dogs in your rear view mirror. The breast is formed from a piece of expanded metal. Rebar talons wrap around the exhaust system from the same car. A structural crossarm holds the thing together. The foundation that supports it is a concrete footing. Unfortunately I never learned the names of the girls buried there. I scratched two crosses and the word "CHOLERA" into the wet concrete. Sparrows have since made a nest in the body and a badger has excavated a home under the concrete footing. The graves are just to the east of the sculpture.

When I go back to S.D. people come up and say "what did you do that for?" I am sure that no one outside my family knows the reason why, except you.

A Movable Feast (on painting literally)(SOLD)

These crabs are so much fun. It seems like I am not really trying. It is difficult to judge your own work, and sometimes paintings just......."HAPPEN!" I may just drink a bottle of whiskey and pick a fight some small man I'm pretty sure I can beat. Hang out. Have some minnow.
Acrylic on canvas 18"X22" (SOLD)

The crabe bleu studies (Lets go to my place and molt)

I do lots of sketches of crabs. I know quite a few of the body parts. I put these 2 together and smeared some chalk on tracing paper. Looking for a cool way to take this to a canvas where the proportions may change in my particular xy scale conversion. Mixed media. (Priceless)

Walking on Sunset (on painting the beachroad) (SOLD)

I certainly enjoyed painting this. I did a tone sketch with washes in acrylic last night. This morning the canvas was dry and I mucked in with oils. I am quite satisfied with my efforts. Another scene along the beachroad at sunset. I have painted this house before. "No Parking" and "Beachroad 2:00AM". Oil on canvas 20"X36"
This painting is sold.
Thank you. This painting was one of my first with oils. I did do a acrylic underpainting.

Monday Trashday (the beachroad saga)

Hello to my old good A&E buddy, Doug Dieter, out there in Sacramento, Cal. Found me with a google search. This scene must look familiar to you.
It is very easy to overwork paintings, and if you love to paint, then you must fight that urge also. "But,............... I just got goin' good!"
I don't know if this is finished but it certainly was fun to paint. "Yes, but there is that bit just over the chateau, that certainly could stand another splash." The light at sundown on the beach road is wonderful.
I often beg for critiques. Carole Thompson, owner of Lighthouse Gardens "offered" a word on my work. "......Again the lean........". Thanks, Carole. Acrylic on Canvas 20"X36"

Pink,Yellow, Blue (on painting the beach road)

Another scene at sundown along North Carolina Highway 12 (the beach road)
Oil on canvas 22"X18" (Check for availability).

Wrap Around (On "please question the engineer")(SOLD)

I did this painting a while ago. Another scene along North Carolina Highway 12 (the beachroad) a little oceanfront house. This house has been moved back from the first line of vegetation and raised above the flood plain. You can tell by the way the foundation pilings don't align with anything above. The painting was a little too loose for my personal taste and without telling you why the foundation looked odd it seemed a little odd to me. Lesson learned "PAINT WHAT YOU SEE" and please " question the engineer". The last time I broke out the oils I reworked this, and I am now happy with it. Oil on Canvas 22"X18". (SOLD)

"Crabe bleu" (real men don't do washes)(SOLD)

A painting of one of the ususual suspects. This felt a little too cool. I highlighted areas of the yellow green with a yellow white wash. I washed in a few more bluegreen shadows. Real men don't use washes. I have paintings hung in a gallery in Historic Corolla Village. So the next time you're in Corolla, NC. Stop at

I'm ready for my closeup now (painting the geometry of it)

I break all the rules on crab color with these red crabs. I like red and the blue green feels cool and that's what I know about painting. (red and turquoise) I do know something about design. Fine design has recognizable geometry. Red crab or blue the geometry of the thing has to be sound. If it is all else can be forgiven. I painted on this with my camcorder running, and then I painted on it some more. I had a sandwich a little later and then I painted on it some more. After a while I painted it some more and then I signed my name to it when I liked it. Acrylic on Canvas 16"X16". You can buy this painting directly from the artist for $195.
