Colony Lost (in another vien) SOLD

I have always been puzzled by signs that say things like, "Lost Colony 12 miles"   Is it lost or not? Interesting story about how we screwed the Indians right from the git go.  The Lost Colony is a play performed on summer nights. The story revolves around a colony of British subjects that came to the new world only  seeking an opportunity to exploit the native population on Roanoke Island and how those loyal subjects somehow vanished during an extended stay sir Walter Raleigh took in London. Lots of drama with indians, the queen, her ill fated venture on Roanoke Sound and the first English child born in "the new world".  At least new to the white folk.  I doubt that the natives viewed  little Virginnia Annadious Dare with the same awe as the palefaces. Nowadays everything in Dare county is named after her, almost. Virginia Dare Trail, Elizabethan Gardens, The Dare County Festival Park, annadious street.

The gentile whites payed homage to their native hosts and called a little town Wanchese, after the chief that was witness to that ill fated venture on the shores of Roanoke Sound. 

I am sure, if  there were any indians still around, they would be pleased.

I am posting this reference photo to show you how this piece of Wanchese Harbour used to look.About a foot above the water line welders have cut away the hull of the Bald Eagle. I took this picture about 2 months ago.  I heard that the wreck of the Bald Eagle has been removed. I like the gloves in the foreground. Screw you.

A lot of people come to the outer banks on vacation.  Over the years a lot of people have rented the house behind "Old Miller's Pharmacy"or what is now "The Beachroad Grill" in Nag's Head, North Carolina. I have painted this house three times in the past. This is the forth time that this particular cottage has showed up in my paintings. A couple that had stayed in this house saw my painting in a gallery. They did not buy it at the time and it was sold before they got back to the gallery. That painting was "Sidewalks, Fences and Walls". Friends of the couple contacted me and asked if I would paint it again as a gift.

I have been painting on this a lot. Wiping away rigging, moving stuff. It is always difficult learning a new subject, and all this apparatus with the nettings has a lot of shapes.

The fishing boat "Capt. Ralph" is docked in Wanchese Harbour.

No inference. Although, I have known it to be so.

I enjoyed painting this a lot, it came out as if I had been preparing my entire life to paint this. Wanchese Harbour is a great place to get shots of a working seafood park. It is my sincere hope that boats like "Sassy Sarah" will always have seafood to catch in the coastal waters along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I pray the wetlands along the Gulf of Mexico can survive our best efforts.

I painted another crab. This ain't no dog and pony show. As a sidebar, I used a photo of a bluecrab in the previous painting I did and stayed as faithful as I could to the photo, this one however, I just made up. I would not have guessed that the two would be quite so similar.

Kitty Hawk Lifesaving Station and Bar&Grill (SOLD)

This place was originally built as a lifesaving station. The Wright Brothers stayed in this building when they came to Outer Banks to test their theories of flight. Some time later it was decided that Kitty Hawk  really didn't need a lifesaving station, and they would drop the whole business of saving lives. Someone else decided it to keep up the good work, and did a lot of additions and it has been saving lives like mine regularly, and pretty often too. They serve a fine rum and tonic.

Painting with deeply seeded issues

I'm talkin' about the cat and painting here, not me. This ain't no confessional here.

I did not wake up this morning thinking I would be depicting a cat with obvious issues. I have looked at a lot of cat paintings, a lot, and  all  those cats seemed happy and calm and well adjusted little kitties and they make you feel warm and fuzzy. So whats the deal with my cats?

Last Trip to Serendipity (SOLD)

I'm never comin' back.

I may add a bit more paint to this, but it is all but finished.

 A lot of painters do a detailed sketch in pencil or chalk to define the shapes before they add paint. Not me. I muck right in and then wipe it off and then muck in some more. This leaves my canvases pretty oily before I find the shapes. I will probably have to let this dry some or use a very soft brush. I decided to push my luck and paint this wonderful house on Hatteras Island one more time in its old location. They moved it this spring. If  you did not get to witness the move, here is a youtube video. (Sidebar) The house moving contractor is the same company that moved the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse a few years ago.

Shedder's Waltz(SOLD)

 I did something a little different here, my wee mouton. I first coated the canvas with black acrylic paint, 2 coats. I wanted to paint this instead of drawing and then coloring, which is my usual M.O.  It got me here faster and in a more loose manner.

 When I first moved to the outer banks I did not know what crab shedders were. In an elaborate process, females blue crabs are set out in pans of circulating brackish water. At an appropriate time in May, a male crab is introduced to the pan. The females sense the male and assume its time to molt. The female willingly sheds her hard crusty exoskeleton with the assumption mating will ensue (ensue?). The moment she has molted she is placed on ice and awaits her true fate. Fried Softshells. Crab shedding is what its called. If the crabs are not put on ice all but immediately, they become paper shells and then leatherbacks and then back to hard shell crabs.
