A Paris Stomp

Here Rick Nilson does his best to mock the masters. In this case the artist is Gustave Caillebotte and the painting is "Paris, Rainy Street". "I have just sketched in some of the shapes. No.  Don't ask me why. I spend a lot of time deciding what not to paint. Yes. If I get past it, then there is the "how not to paint it" bit. Sometimes. I will probably keep adding paint to this. No.  Don't ask me why. I am having a lot of fun with this scene, but there is just so much.....stuff." He said.

The Bell "Murder!", I answered(SOLD)

This cat can be a real jerk. Sure, I  enjoy the occasional headless songbird as much as the next guy. Shirley, however, was bringing me more than we could really use.  I decided to try a collar and a bell in an attempt to level the field. Later that evening she brought a dead bunny to my studio door and proceeded to sling it's  lifeless body around like a bloody glove made of fine italian leather. When the limp carcess hit the sliding glass door for the second time she looked up at me. "Murder!", I answered.  Oil on canvas 8"X16" This painting is sold.

Pastoral South Dakota

I took these shots wandering around North Eastern South Dakota. In the photo with the ponies, if you look hard you will see a llama. This llama has his own story. There is also a zebra cross something and a mule.

Good Kitty, Play Dead Kitty (SOLD)

Cindy said when our old cat dies we should get a puppy.
In an act of unwavering gratitude for all the good years we have given her, this cat walked right out in the driveway and assumed the position. She recovered, but I am watching closely thinking border collie.
There is a lot of open or negative space on this canvas. I call it "not kitty".

Bestiole Amie (SOLD)

About This Painting:
The smart continental calls them Bestiole Amie. Thats french for lady bug.   I painted this in a workshop demo. One of the ladies brought the photo from her garden. Immediately after explaining the fatal error of putting the focal point in the middle of the canvas, I did exactly that. To lessen that feel, I used a technique I am fumbling with.  I intentionally blur or soften a  balance of  the edges. Check out Karin Jurick's people. Thanks Karin. I blurred enough of the bug to bring the focal point to the face in the lower middle. Still not the best solution, but it doesn't, you know, "...bug me, my wee mouton".

Pine Grove Blues

The Godspell according to Rick Nilson. Alla Prima.  I having been feeling very "punie" for the last 4 days. I have made some progress on this, but I like best my alla prima work or the stuff I do in one setting and it is difficult to maintain interest in the work over several days or sessions. So now I post this questioning my morality, no I mean mortatilty. I felt you deserved to know and I didn't call in sick. I think I may nominate myself as employee of the month.
I am calling this progress.
I am lazily approaching a crazy commission. This is a sketch work in progress.

"Ewe on the Coolin' Board" (Death Letter)

I have a doctor's note and a perscription for vicadin. I had a wisdom tooth pulled and I feel equally as wise  as before the incident occured. When I first started painting I did not know there was a difference between fine linen and the duck canvas they sell at Walmart. I bought Walmart canvas duck and bought 1x pine at Home Depot for the stretchers. I then put one thin layer of gesso on the canvas. I then painted something with acrylic paint. That was a couple of years ago.  In the first few brush strokes of painting these sheep on Bitter Lake
I realized I did not have enough gesso on this canvas. No wonder I wore out so many brushes. This canvas is like painting on stucco or devils hide sandpaper. I think I will try this again on a different type of canvas. I told you that this whole painting thing has been trial and error right from the gitgo.

Bitter Lake is expanding rapidly and has taken much or all of this pasture. More than the pasture the south end of Waubay is threatened by the  rising water of Bitter Lake. I have studied it some in google and it appears that the airport in Watertown may have been the final manmade dam that held back most of the runoff from west of Summit. As a land planner  I see this as  a golden opportunity to redesign Watertown. Odd how the names seem so obvious to the telling of this particular "yarn" It is imporatant in the telling of any good story to be keen enough with your wit to know when to stop the telling.

Your Name Here (SOLD)

About This Painting:
When I was a kid I wanted a tee shirt like the ones I saw advertised with the girl and the guy standing there proudly modeling the bold text saying "Your Name Here". When I started painting this it seemed appropriate to add my own POV.   A blatant go at art appealing to the masses. This little house is in Nag's Head across from "Jockey's Ridge""Between the Highways"
Media: Oil on stretched canvas
Size: 12 in X 20 in (30.5 cm X 50.8 cm)
this painting is sold.
