There are a number of nonconforming structures in Nag's Head, NC. This is one of them. This house sits "IN" the Ablemarle Sound. There are a few of these on the soundside of the Outer Banks. I did a bit of research on this place at the end of Soundside Road in Nag's Head. It has a name, "Stinson Ranch" and several articles on the web about it. Here is one link
This place is listed on the National Historic Registry. Who knew?
I have seen this place painted before by other local artists.
This scene is reminiscent of perhaps what the beach access at Arch Street in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina might look like should you be driving the beachroad in the mornings. Without further qualifications, no explanations will be offered.
I really love painting on these smooth wood panels. I have used up all I have on hand. Also I use a lot less thinner and a lot more paint.
When I was back in South Dakota I chased my favorite rooster around Bob's spread by mud creek. I painted this rooster a few times last year . I was glad to see that he made it through the winter. He brings his best game.
My first go on one of these smooth wood panels. I am instantly aware of every brushstroke. I love painting on these. I applied 4 coats of gesso, sanded between coats. It seems as much work to prep. the wood as it did to paint it.
This white heron was stalking a slough near Bitter Lake.
A lot of farmers in South Dakota are more than a little pissed off at the Canadians for letting their geese freeload in the Midwest and eat us out of house and field. Rising waters and warmer temperatures means a population explosion of these guys. In an effort to keep the numbers in check the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks has decided to increase the limit of Canada geese that can be shot during hunting season from 1 to 9. Canadas be warned.
If you are confused about the one to shoot, canadas go "honk", Canadians go "aye"
Oil on canvas 6"X12"".......when the waters warm two blue crabs wait for the right moment. And then suddenly she hauled off and molted right there.......in front of him. Then the hand of god came from above and smote her to a cardboard box lined with newspaper. "
I have always been puzzled by signs that say things like, "Lost Colony 12 miles" Is it lost or not? Interesting story about how we screwed the Indians right from the git go. The Lost Colony is a play performed on summer nights. The story revolves around a colony of British subjects that came to the new world only seeking an opportunity to exploit the native population on Roanoke Island and how those loyal subjects somehow vanished during an extended stay sir Walter Raleigh took in London. Lots of drama with indians, the queen, her ill fated venture on Roanoke Sound and the first English child born in "the new world". At least new to the white folk. I doubt that the natives viewed little VirginniaAnnadious Dare with the same awe as the palefaces. Nowadays everything in Dare county is named after her, almost. Virginia Dare Trail, Elizabethan Gardens, The Dare County Festival Park, annadious street.
The gentile whites payed homage to their native hosts and called a little town Wanchese, after the chief that was witness to that ill fated venture on the shores of Roanoke Sound.
I am sure, if there were any indians still around, they would be pleased.
